Sonko Kick starts preparations to celebrate the UN Environment’s 50 Years

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko today through his administration, kick started preparations to celebrate the UN Environment’s 50 Years.

The participants met at The National Museums ahead of the World Environment Day which is celebrated on 5th of June.

The United Nations Environment Programme will on Thursday commemorate 50 years.

The Governor welcomed the children, youth and young adults from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Sweden and China who are participating in the ceremony.

“As we approach the , it is important to appreciate that the world still faces stiff environmental challenges. Some of these are linked to climate change caused by human activity.” he stated


World Environment Day was established in 1972 but first held in 1974, which shows that concern about the environment goes back several decades at least.

143 countries take part in World Environment Day, and the day focuses on environmental concerns ranging from pollution to global warming and sustainable food production to protection of wildlife.

This year the focus is ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’,  and the nations are ready to report on events and efforts to reduce plastic pollution.
