University Students May Protest Over Increased School Fees

The government is keen in ensuring that the university fees has been increased. a major increase from Ksh26000 to Ksh60000 was presented in parliament and has so far been approved CS education, Amin Muhamed. The fact that it was not well received by the Kenyan there is a possible threat for students to protests as they had poised that they will protest to block the implementation.

Interestingly, the rather unpleasant news about university fee increase came at a time the government is also aggressively pursuing defaulters of Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans.

Chief Executive Officer Charles Ringera warned defaulting to pay the loan was a criminal offense as prescribed under section 15 and 16 of the HELB Act. He said the Board would use all means possible to recover the loans including arresting defaulters, a position that Mohamed supported but on condition that the loanees are not joblessness.

According to a report released by HELB, the loaning agency is seeking to recover KSh 7.2 billion from 74,000 beneficiaries who are yet to repay. “Default in loan repayment according to the HELB Act is a criminal offence and therefore HELB can seek the intervention of the Officer of the Director of Public Prosecutions where loanees and employers are breach of Section 15 and 16 of the HELB Act,” Ringera said.
