Too much love to the less privileged, Kenyan teacher tipped for KSh 100m global prize

36-year old Nakuru teacher has made Kenya shine globally after being nominated among the best 10 tutors in the 2019 edition of prestigious Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize.

Peter Mokaya who teaches Maths and Physics at Keriko Secondary School, beat other 10,000 applicants from 179 countries across the globe on Saturday, February 23.

Though winning came as a surprise, his students and school administration believed Mokaya would be top the list which comes with KSh 100 million prize money.

On his part, the young tutor who has been donating gives 80% of his monthly income to the less privileged said even though the school headteacher urged him to apply, he was sure could not make to the top.

“I am pleased, honored and humbled to be selected from thousands of applicants from around the world to the top 10 list. I appreciate this great recognition on behalf of all the hard working teachers throughout the world whose great achievements go unnoticed,”he said.
