Empire’s Jussie Smollet charged for false police report

Empire star Jussie Smollet, based on what a grand jury found to be probable cause that he had staged the attack was on Wednesday charged.

The actor was accused of lying to police when he claimed he was attacked and beaten on the streets of Chicago. A crime that was treated as hate crime over Smollet’s sexual orientation and/or his race.

Police spokesman, Anthony Guglielmi on his Twitter said the 36-year-old actor is facing criminal charge for “Disorderly Conduct / Filing a False Police Report”.

The New York Times, citing unnamed law enforcement sources, said Smollett had been indicted by an Illinois grand jury that found probable cause that he had staged the attack.

“Like any other citizen, Mr. Smollett enjoys the presumption of innocence, particularly when there has been an investigation like this one where information, both true and false, has been repeatedly leaked.”

Smollett earlier told police his assailants were white, and that they shouted something about “MAGA country” – an apparent reference to Trump’s campaign slogan “Make America Great Again” – as they struck him to the ground.

He is suspected on his purported hate attack to have been attacked because he is gay and/or black.
