The tribulations at the French club seem to thicken each day after the tragic death of its former star if the current troubles are anything to go by.

Nantes have been fined by the French Football League after fans set off flares as part of a tribute to Emiliano Sala on two separate occasions.

Supporters of the Ligue 1 club fired off flares and held aloft a giant banner of Sala at the game against St Etienne on January 30, the first fixture after the plane carrying him disappeared over the English Channel.

The troubles continued after reports indicated that the French club at the centre of a legal dispute with Cardiff City over the tragic Emiliano Sala transfer, has been raided by tax inspectors.

Officials searched club premises at Nantes on Tuesday morning as a tax evasion investigation was launched by the National Public Prosecutor against the club’s president, Waldemar Kita, according to reports in France.

Sala had signed for Cardiff City for a club record £15 million (US$19 million) last month and was flying to his new team from former side Nantes when his plane went missing on Jan 21.

The case is not immediately believed to be related to financial arrangements around Sala, who joined Cardiff City in a £15 million deal just three days before his death in an English Channel plane crash last month.

Relations between Nantes, Cardiff City and the intermediary Willie McKay are becoming increasingly acrimonious.

Telegraph Sportdisclosed this week how Cardiff are ready to launch a negligence claim against Nantes if an official report finds the pilot of the plane did not have the correct licence. Nantes have sent two legal demands for full payment of the transfer fee.

Nantes have now been fined £14,400 (€16,000) for the initial incident at the St Etienne game and a further £3,900 (€4,500) at the Nimes game for “use of pyrotechnics and throwing objects”.

Sala scored 48 goals in 133 games for Nantes before leaving to join Cardiff.
