Off you go!! why TSC de-registered 29 teachers

Last year’s KCPE examinations recorded the highest number of pupils who sat for their examinations while pregnant a thing that sent chills down the spinal cord of the society and the teaching fraternity as well who promised to look into the matter as well as seeking fr an amicable solution into the matter.

To address the matter, 29 names of teachers accused of misconduct, have been struck off the teachers’ register by the TSC.

According to media reports from the employer body, the 29 teaching staff members stood accused of having sexual relations with their students with pending cases.

Teachers were also struck off the register for desertion of duty, insubordination, and negligence, as maintained by the.

Teenage pregnancies were at an all-time high during the 2018 national examinations raising concerns from the public and stakeholders.

United Nations Population Fund (UNFP), in a detailed report, revealed that at least 378,397 Kenyan girls aged between 10-19 got pregnant between June and July 2017.

“In exercise of the powers conferred section 30 (1) of the TSC act Chapter 212 of the laws of Kenya, the Commission wishes to notify the public that the persons whose names are specified in the schedule herein below have been removed from the register of the teachers,”
read an excerpt of the notice.

The appalling trend is giving worry to parents who have bestowed a lot of trust in teachers. TSC CEO, Nancy Macharia, attributed the numerous pregnancies as well as forced drop out to teacher-student sexual relationships.

Once a teacher’ name is struck off the register, he or she practically ceases to be in the profession thereon as they are classified as unemployable under the teachers act except by the direction of the commission.

In November 2018, a teacher accused of defiling a student at Moi Girls’ High School, Kamusinga, Bungoma County, was arrested after months on the run.The suspect allegedly committed the offence in June and is said to have defiled a 14-year-old Form Two student after summoning her to his office.

Such cases have been on the rise across the country thus justifying the move to de-register any suspected sex offenders.

In a similar move, 32 suspected sex offenders under the TSC were deregistered in October 2018, bringing the total to 151, in under a year, for reasons ranging from sex offences to negligence.
