Mangrove-logging once again legalised in Lamu

The government has lifted the ban on mangrove logging in Lamu County.

The announcement was made by Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests at the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), Charity Muthoni Munyasia on Tuesday.

This comes as reprieve to most families in the area, whose livelihood depends on the mangrove trade.

It is reported that over 30,000 families in Lamu rely on the trade.

The lifted ban however comes with a provision that they acquire permits first. Mangrove traders will now be expected to secure permits from the KFS office in Lamu, state their experience in mangrove harvesting and indicate where they intend to sell their logs.

Officials have further emphasized that the ban-lift is only effective in Lamu.

“Neighbouring counties like Tana River and other parts of the country should understand that the embargo is still in force,” said Ms Munyasia.
