“It was a hot seat that caused my wife a miscarriage,” Former Lands Chairman, Swazuri

Mohamed Swazuri

The outgoing National Lands Commission (NLC) Chairman Mohamed Swazuri on Tuesday evening lamented the personal loss he had suffered because of the risky nature of his job.

Swazuri’s term and that of other NLC commissioners ended on Tuesday midnight.

He stated that heading the lands commission had taken a toll on his personal life including losing his child after his wife suffered a miscarriage as a result of the stress coming from workplace.

He added that his life was threatened on several occasions, saying he escaped eight assassination attempts.

“I have lost a child because of this. My wife miscarried because of this job, you don’t put that in the newspapers. I have escaped assassination attempts, eight of them, the media has only reported on only two of them.”

“You think it is easy when people are trying to kill me. I have suffered and my family has suffered but because this is my country I have to serve and I am going to do what is needed. Whether the ministry likes it or not,” the visibly agitated Swazuri stated.

The former NLC boss defended his record saying he had served Kenyans despite opposition and threats from land grabbers and government officials who were threatened by the commission’s powers.

Swazuri will be leaving NLC with a cloud hanging over his head as he is currently fighting a corruption-related charges where he was charged with fraudulently authorizing compensation for SGR land.
