Juan MatacReveals How He Neutralised Jorginho

Chelsea’s FA Cup dreams are over this season following a 2-0 home defeat to Manchester United.

Both goals were scored in the first half. Paul Pogba set up Ander Herrera for United’s opener. Pogba then doubled United’s lead with a clinical diving header.

Man United are now in the quarterfinals, where they’ve been drawn away at Wolves.

How did Jorginho get on?
Once again Maurizio Sarri played Jorginho in the defensive midfield role in Chelsea’s XI.

Accordingly, N’Golo Kante was deployed in his more advanced role on the right.

Jorginho almost claimed a rare assist in the first half. The Italian dinked a lovely ball over the top for Gonzalo Higuain, however the Argentine failed to finish.

However in general it was another largely disappointing performance for Jorginho, who was once again kept quiet as he failed to boss the game.

Juan Mata followed Arsenal & Tottenham’s model
How hasn’t Sarri dealt with this issue yet?

In recent months, several Premier League sides have shown how to neutralise Jorginho’s impact for the Blues.

Against Tottenham back in November, Dele Alli showed how Jorginho could be unsettled in Chelsea’s midfield.

In January against Arsenal, it was the turn of Aaron Ramsey to silence Jorginho.

Ramsey shadowed the Italian throughout the match as Chelsea’s metronome was kept quiet.

More recently, Bournemouth’s David Brooks did a similar job on Jorginho as the Cherries won 4-0.

While on Monday at Stamford Bridge, it was the turn of Juan Mata to apply the same ‘attacking midfielder marks Jorginho’ tactics.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Mata vs Jorginho
After the match, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer discussed how Mata’s hard work meant Jorginho struggled to impact the FA Cup tie:

The performance was fantastic, our tactics worked.

We asked our midfielders to press higher and get into the box and it worked. The defending in the second half was fantastic.

Chelsea are a good team. They have their way of playing but Juan Mata did a fantastic job on Jorginho and we were absolutely perfect defensively.
