Naivasha Quarry work killed after accidentally detonating a quarry explosive

Regular operations at one of Naivasha’s largest quarry sites have been brought to a standstill after one of the workers was blown off by an explosive. The middle-aged man was blown off while setting up a mining explosive used to blow stones at Kinamba quarry located off the Naivasha-Kirima road.

There was a moment of scare at the site as several employees and residents fled the area for fear that the explosive may again erupt, as reported by a local newspaper. It took police intervention to calm down the residents after they arrived at the scene and ferried the body to the  Naivasha sub-county mortuary hospital. Jackson Muthenge, one of the workers at the quarry, said it was a norm for explosives to be used at the site for easy working with the stones that would later be turned into building stones.

He said it was the first incident the explosive went off unexpectedly and they are yet to determine what went wrong.

“There was a loud bang and the deceased was cut into pieces and died on the spot due to the impact of the explosive,” he said.
