The past week has seen a couple of developments in terms of data plans, which, to say the least, keep getting better and better. Telkom Kenya’s approach to addressing stiff competition in the data plan sector has been announced, and will effectively see revisions to its Combo plan dubbed mzito that bundles voice, data and free data at night.

The plan, which has Kes 500 and Kes 1000 options, had added more units that should see users access more content on the net and talk to their loved ones more.

It is also worth noting that Mzito can be supplemented with a similar purchase before the primary one expires, and all units (data and voice) will see a cumulative increase.

Telkom has invested billions of shillings to expand LTE and 3G coverage. It also appears to target young people who spend a substantial amount of time on the net.

“The new combo bundle is built with the data and experience needs of our customers in mind,” Amer Atwi, Telkom’s MD for Mobile Division said. “While they continue to demand for affordability, they are also keen on holistic and comprehensive offerings that address their dynamic needs: browsing, downloading, streaming  and updating their apps, actions that are now integral in everyday life.”

The carrier has also opened a ground station in Nyeri for the Loon Project. This will be its third station (besides those in Nairobi and Nakuru) that aims to bring Loon closer to commercial launch. The 4G internet beaming project aims to offer internet access to remote areas using balloons instead of constructing physical towers that are often expensive to install.
