Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti summoned city billionaire businessman Humphrey Kariuki and other directors of Thika-based Africa Spirits Limited over allegations of tax evasion and grilled them for nine hours.

What they found is shocking!

The detectives questioning billionaire Kariuki were taken by surprise last evening after it emerged that he is a citizen of Cyprus.

These revelation complicates DCI’s attempts to unravel the shareholding structure of his various firms.

While Kenyans have a right to become dual citizens, the Citizenship and Immigration Act declares that “every dual citizen shall disclose his or her other citizenship in the prescribed manner within three months of becoming a dual citizen”.

“We are questioning him on that issue since failure to declare dual citizenship is an offence,” Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti said.

Asked whether Mr Kariuki will be charged in court, Mr Kinoti retorted: “Why not? This is an offence.”

According to TI’s report released last month, a Cypriot passport enables one to do business throughout the European Union, since Cyrus is a member, its investor citizenship has of late been criticised by other EU members and Transparency International, who fear it could become a “gateway to Europe for corrupt people and money laundering”.

Last week, sleuths attached to the DCI raided  Africa Spirits Limited headquarters in Thika and recovered an estimated 21 million counterfeit excise stamps and 312,000 litres of ethanol.

The ethanol is believed to have been smuggled into the country from Tanzania.

Mr Kariuki’s daughter, Nyawira Wangari Kariuki, was also summoned. Also questioned were directors of some of Kariuki’s companies, including Mary Wambui Njihia and Peter Njenga Kariuki.

The others include Gental Limited, Claudine Mathis, Lionsbridge Limited directors Dennis Murithi Kimathi and Mbobua, Kigumba Limited directors and Kisima Management Company Limited.

Kenyans too were taken by surprise with the revelations. Here are some of their reactions.
