Tourism CS Najib Balala has today inspected ongoing works of the Mombasa Regeneration Initiative that comprises of development of Mama Ngina Waterfront & Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach.
Balala said that the government recognizes that coastal beaches are a very important destination for both local and international visitors.
He also added that with Mombasa being a focal point for both local and international arrivals, there is need to create new experiences for visitors.
The Tourism CS also stated that as the reason why the government is investing into Mombasa Regeneration Initiative, which involves Mama Ngina Waterfront being transformed into a recreation area where people will experience local Mombasa cultures, enjoying seafront that overlooks the Indian Ocean.
Najib Balala said that the transformation is what will spur a 24-hour economy, facilitate open air/al fresco restaurants & cafés, allow for creation of a Fun Park and provide for provision of Water sports.
“The waterfront will be a recreation area for residents, create jobs, enhance the iconic landscape of the area, while visitors coming into the waterfront will spur interest in that part of Mombasa” he said
He also mentioned that with the coming of the waterfront, there will be rearrangement of the ferry area, more convenience & safety for tourists, also aid in establishing order among matatus operating in the area.
The government will also ensure that the waterfront will have 24-hour manned security, well lit at night to enhance 24-hour economy.
Waterfront will be managed by an independent body set up by the Ministry of tourism and the entry will be free.
