Okoth Obado seeks review of strict bail terms in Sharon Otieno case.

While appearing for a mention of the case on Thursday, the embattled governor made an application asking the court to review the strict bail terms in his case.

Mr Obado is being charged with the murder of his then girlfriend Sharon Otieno and her unborn child.

The application was made to Justice Jessie Lesiit. The governor asked the Justice to release his passport and to allow him to travel through Homa Bay County. The governor had been banned from setting foot in Homa Bay County or visiting potential witnesses and Sharon’s parents.

Mr Obado said that he is ineligible to visit eight constituencies in his Migori County because they are under the no-go zone.

The High Court issued tough conditions for his release from police custody last year, including a 20-km radius restriction in his Migori home.

Justice Lesiit also ordered him to surrender his passport and seek permission before travelling abroad.

The governor said he chairs the Council of Governors’ agriculture team which may require him to attend international forums.

The state prosecutor Alexander Muteti told the court that they have supplied 10 statements to the defence team and eight are still remaining.

The case will be mentioned on March 20 for pretrial.
