NEMA Responds to Residents Wails! Baringo Road Construction Suspended

Construction of 36km Baringo road stalls over noise, dust

Countless times we have been told that no gain without pain. However, Baringo residents living near the 36-Km Oinamoi-Kapluk-Barwesa Road, which is under construction cannot bear the pain any longer. In as much as they need a good road, the effects of the construction process are unbearable.

The residents living near the road raised complaints about too much dust and noise coming from the construction process.

Following the continued complains NEMA suspended the construction of the Oinamoi-Kapluk-Barwesa road.
According to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), the contractor of the 36-kilometer road did not adhere to the environmental rules.

The residents lamented over business centers including food kiosks and hotels being closed

The road was expected to open up the lower parts of the Kerio Valley region and the NEMA move has elicited mixed reactions from several quarters.

The construction of this road was commissioned by Deputy President William Ruto in July last year.

Baringo County NEMA Director Josiah Nyandoro faulted the contractor, SBI International as well as the Kenya

Rural Roads Authority (KERRA) for not carrying out an environmental impact assessment.
He added that they have up to February 28 to comply with the regulations, failure to which they will face the full force of the law.
