Reaction to Ashley Young’s one-year contract extension may have been lukewarm last week, but Manchester United fans are now showering their defender in praise following an incident with Angel Di Maria.
Former Red Devil Di Maria wasn’t exactly given the warmest reception upon his return to Old Trafford, given his thoroughly underwhelming spell at the club during the 2014/15 season.
The Argentinian arrived at United from Real Madrid for a whopping £59.7million – at the time a record signing for a British club. The contract was for five years but despite moments of brief brilliance he struggled to adapt to life in English football and the following summer he departed to PSG, where he has remained ever since.
Anyway, back to the game game.
Young and Di Maria were battling it out for a loose ball when suddenly Young took it upon himself to absolutely batter his former teammate off the pitch, with Di Maria subsequently flying into the metal hoardings. OUCH.
The winger even had to have a little time out to receive treatment, much to the delight of the home support.
In truth, Young was perhaps fortunate to not receive a second yellow for the shove, however he survived and has since been applauded for his efforts by Man Utd fans.
