Governor’s convoy attacked by police officers: Was he a target?

West Pokot Governor, John Lonyangapuo was on Tuesday evening attacked along the Kitale-Lodwar highway, at Lami Nyeusi area while going for a peace meeting.

The governor was in the company of other leaders including members of parliament and the region’s security team, who also came under attack.

MPs in the convoy included Samuel Moroto of Kapenguria, Peter Lochakapong of Sigor and Kacheliba’sMark Lonunokol.

Allegedly, the convoy was attacked by police officers attached to the Kainuk Administration station in Turkana County.

The leaders were heading to Takaywa village where one person had been killed and more than 500 herds of cattle stolen by cattle rustlers.

Gunshots ensued between the Governor’s security and police from Kainuk.

The governor later condemned this incident stating the raid had been stage-managed. “We need to beef up security in all hot spots and disarm all those with legal firearms,” he stated.

Lonyangapuo called upon leaders from both communities to preach peace so that the community could enjoy the peace that had been witnessed for the last three years.

The peace had been witnessed since Turkana and Pokot leaders conducted a peace caravan to sensitize communities on peaceful coexistence.
