The family of Carol Mwatha, a human rights who was found dead on Tuesday evening, has poured cold water on the botched abortion claims from police.

Those who spoke to the media at City Mortuary, Nairobi, where her body was discovered said the circumstances surrounding her death have raised eyebrows.

For instance, the family cited the number of times they had been to the facility: February 7, 8 and 9, but were told no one by the name Caroline had been booked.

Morgue attendants who spoke to Citizen TV however explained that the late Mwatha’s body was brought to the facility on February 7 and booked as private: this to them meant that she had already been identified.

Another oddity that the family has picked is that the body which had first been taken to Kenyatta National Hospital had been booked by a man who identified himself as the late Mwatha’s husband.

Her body was later taken to City Mortuary by a woman who booked her under a different name: Carol Mbeki.

According to the late Mwatha’s kin, her husband was away in Dubai for business during her disappearance and could not have been the mystery man who took her body to KNH.

Speaking to the media, the activist’s father Stanlus Mbai insisted that his daughter had been killed as a result of her work.

Caroline’s death was neither an accident nor a sickness, she was killed for speaking the truth,” Mr Mbai said.

Mr Mbai further explained that earlier in January, the late Mwatha had asked her parents to keep whatever she was doing ‘under wraps’ as it was ‘sensitive’.

Houghton Irungu, Amnesty International Director of the Kenyan Chapter, said the human rights group is waiting for a conclusive and independent autopsy that will reveal the cause of death.

He however noted that it was strange that the late Mwatha could have been laying at the mortuary undiscovered for close to 7 days.

Family members will be reporting to the facility on Wednesday, February 13 for the autopsy.

Six people, among them an alleged boyfriend to the late Mwatha, were reportedly arrested on Tuesday evening in connection to the alleged botched abortion and disposal of the body.
