Reprieve to Striking Nairobi County Workers as Sonko Assures Them of Their Pay Increment

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko gives his assurance to the striking county government workers that he will pay them by the end of this month.

Nairobi county workers had earlier camped outside City Hall seeking to be addressed by the governor himself regarding the 15% pay rise that they had been promised under the Collective Bargain Agreement.

While addressing them, Sonko assured them that the money had been set aside and they will soon get paid according to the agreement.

Ni hiyo kipengele kidogo tuSRC na Treasury tukae nao watusaidie mpate pesa zenu,”  he said. (It is just that small clause, SRC and treasury will sit down to help us sought out this issue.)

Sonko stood with workers telling them that he fully backed their strike since it is within their right to do so.

About 13,000 county workers participated in the strike seeking the Salaries and Renumeration Commission to allow the county government of Nairobi to implement the CBA as ruled by the Industrial Court Judge Justice Nelson Abwodha in November 2018.

The workers claimed that their last payment was not done according to the agreement and were surprised to find out that the SRC had not honored the terms and yet they agreed to do so.
