Protests in Kisumu over state of road

Several trucks and vehicles along Kisumu’s Mamboleo-Miwani highway were on Monday stopped by a group of youth who blocked the road in protests.

The residents blocked the road with boulders, demanding that the government repairs it.

They claim that the two governments- national and county- have over time failed to address the issue of the roads in the region.

Effort was made in December when the road was partially gravelled and watered as President Uhuru Kenyatta visited. This did not last as heavy trucks frequent the road.

The road has cost the residents their livelihoods, with matatu operators hiking fare and food businesses along the road being forced to vacate because of the dust.

County Executive Committee Member for Roads Thomas Ondijo responded to the claims saying that the road was under the Kenya National Highways Authority.
