Nairobi Hospital Refute Claims of Being Involved in Wanja’s Death

June Wanza

Nairobi Hospital has denied reports of a woman who was claimed to have died in the institution as a result of a botched breast enlargement operation.

The institution has since quashed reports that it played a role in her death.

In their affidavit filed on Monday, the city hospital claimed that the woman, Ms June Wanza suffered from  complications she got during the surgery performed at Surgeoderm Healthcare clinic.

Earlier on there had been claims by three plastic surgeons- Prof Stanley Khainga, Dr MartinAjujo and Dr Evans Cherana, who had moved to court to stop the way investigations about Ms Wanza’s death were being carried out by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDB).

“I can confirm that although the patient passed on at Nairobi Hospital, she was only brought there because of complications which arose from a procedure done by the three doctors at their facility,” said Dr Christopher Abeid of Nairobi Hospital.

Dr. Abeid, however, termed their claim as baseless since they should have reported the matter the very first time it reached them.

As the parties continue blaming one another in the court, KMPDB has already identified that Dr Ajujo, who operated Wanza was still a trainee and should have not been allowed to conduct the operation without being supervised by a practicing plastic surgeon.

Dr. Ajujo and Prof Khainga have been identified to be shareholders of Surgeoderm Healthcare Limited.

Details have also emerged that Dr Evans Cherana did not posses a locum (private practice) licence from KMPDB.

Nairobi Hospital claims that the legal proceeding filed by Wanja’s widower, Joseph Malupi were inappropriate.

“I believe that if indeed the three doctors had genuine concerns they would have raised them at the inception of the inquiry and not at this point, I believe it was premature for them as they had not exhausted the effective dispute resolution mechanism established by the medical board,” said Dr Abeid.

The city hospital therfore wants the case dismissed by the High Court.

The case awaits mentioning on April 16.
