“My county has only one tarmac road since independence,” reveals governor

Mandera governor Ali Roba made shocking revelations during a live interview with citizen TV when he said his county had not known a tarmac raod until 2014.

The governor revealed that since independence, Mandera County has had only one tarmac road that he commissioned in 2014 when he was elected the first governor of the North Eastern county

Roba stated that the road  has started yielding fruits to the county since the town of Mandera is currently easily accessible and more economically viable.

During its construction, Mandera residents were excited and some made comical some confessions they had never seen a roundabout anywhere apart from school books!

According to governor Roba, the 24km road that runs through Mandera town has cost the County government Ksh1.4 billion.

Roba however decried security issues in the county that have hampered the construction process. He explained that frequent insecurity cases had often led to the suspension of construction activities by contractors.

One of the major incidences of insecurity that have occurred in Mandera is an improvised explosive device (IED) that killed 4 people in June 2017 after the vehicle they were travelling it ran over the device.

In November the same year, an explosive went off after it was hurled at a Catholic church in the county from a moving Toyota Probox.

In January 2018, four children were killed when an explosive device they were playing with exploded.
