WRONG TURN: Was Nation Journalist Lured into a trap?

Nation Media Group is reading malice in what appears to be a plot to intimidate its journalist Kipchumba Some.
The journalist was arrested Tuesday afternoon at a restaurant along Koinange Street, Nairobi.
Details have emerged that the seasoned reporter was on a fact-finding mission when he was swiftly arrested and bundled into a police vehicle for “questioning.”
No OB Recorded
Mr Some, a graduate of Columbia Journalism School, New York, was then driven to Central Police Station. He was, however, to be released later.
It is strange though, that the occurrence book at Central Police station lacks any mention of the arrest of the journalist.

Lured into a trap

NMG Senior Investigative reporter Kipchumba Some

Following the arrest of two brothers accused of defrauding a bank and bribing DCI officers, the journalist arranged to meet the brother to the two accused for leads.

According to Nation Media Group, the brother of the two suspects at first refused to link the journalist to the family, but later agreed to meet at a city restaurant.

It is while at the restaurant when a couple of uniformed police officers pounced on the unsuspecting journalist and arraigned him before Central Police Station OCS Simon Kerich.

Botched bribery attempt

Samatar Yusuf

Last week, EACC officers arrested Mr Samatar Yusuf while as he was attempting to bribe DCI officers to release his brother Abdikarim Yusuf Abdi and cousin Ahmed Mohammed Hassan.

Detectives revealed that Mr Yusuf was the mastermind behind a network of cybercriminals who have managed to swindle millions of cash deposits from Kenyan banks.

The duo, alongside other accomplices, allegedly conspired to fiddle with customer prepaid card balances and data at the National Bank of Kenya, resulting into a loss of more than Sh135.4 million.

Media ‘paid to tarnish family name’

Yusuf, on his part, claims the media house has been ‘paid to tarnish the reputation of his family.’

“You Nation people have been given money to destroy the good name of my family. Why are you looking for my father if my brothers are in trouble?” He asked.

The Kenya Union of Journalists Secretary-General Erick Oduor said the arrest was “an affront to press freedom.”
