A senior Administration Police officer in charge West Pokot county collapsed and died while drinking alcohol in a bar in Nyeri. Festus Mutuku, an inspector of police had traveled to Nyeri to visit his wife who is also a police officer deployed in the area.
According to eye witnesses, Mutuku collapsed at a bar in Nyaribu, Nyeri county, on Tuesday, February 5. The revelers said Mutuku, a regular customer at the bar had ordered and was drinking an alcoholic drink labeled V&A when he collapsed.
They suspected the drink Mutuku was consuming was sub-standard and toxic. Barton Kagathi, who runs a butcher business next to the bar said the deceased had ordered for a quarter kilogramme of meat before the unfortunate incident.
“He had not even eaten his meal when I heard that he had collapsed,” the butcher operator said. Efforts by the residents to rush him to Nyaribu dispensary did not yield much as he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body is lying at Nyeri County Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem to help ascertain cause of his death as authorities launched investigations in to the matter.
