Couples arrested after daughter failed to report to school

A couple has been arrested at Kianjege Village in Kirinyaga County for allegedly denying their daughter the right to education.

According to Kanyekiine Location Chief Lawrence Macharia, the girl was supposed to join Form One at Kirimunge Mixed Day Secondary School in January after the Kirinyaga Central Constituency office paid for her school fees.

However, the parents failed to take her to school.

“Since schools were opened, this girl has been at home. We have arrested both parents and we are going to charge them in court,” said the Chief, who warned that it is against the law to deny a child the right to education.

Asked why they had failed to take their daughter to school, the man claimed that he has been embroiled in a domestic dispute with the wife, who is allegedly opposed to the girl going to school.

The couple was detained at Kerugoya Police Station and are set to be presented in court next week.

The government has been keen on ensuring that all primary school children transition to secondary school, through introduction of free education.
