There will be no more mining of the world’s most precious minerals in Migori County. Migori has become synonymous with gold mining in recent times. The mining sites have been attributed to all manner of crimes including the spread of Jakadala and most recently murder.
But these will be past tense after the high court ordered a Chinese Company to shut down its mining operations in the region.
This follows a petition by Nyatike MP Tom Odege.
Delivering the judgement, Justice G.M.A Ongondo ruled that LIJIN mining Limited, which has been doing mineral exploration in Macalder area, Nyatike Constituency, was operating without a license in addition to polluting the environment through illegal mining of gold and copper.
Justice Ongondo of the Environmental and Land court said everyone has a right to a clean and healthy environment as enshrined in Article 42 of the Constitution.
According to Mr. Odege, the company had been allowed to mine in the area by an area political leader.
