Manchester United’s work in Dubai has given them a Plan B

United worked on a number of different systems during their warm-weather training camp in Dubai earlier this month and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has moved away from his favoured 4-3-3 formation in two of his last three games.

Solskjaer used a 4-4-2 for United’s trips to Wembley and the Emirates with Jesse Lingard effectively playing as a false nine at the tip of the diamond and the strikers stretching the play.

At home against 16th-placed Burnley, it would be a surprise if Solskjaer did not revert back to 4-3-3 with Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Lingard all encouraged to swap positions.

Solskjaer made five changes for the trip to Arsenal and, four days on, looks set to again freshen things up for the visit of Burnley.

Fred and Andreas Pereira are among those who did not play against Brighton and Arsenal while Chris Smalling has been back training and could yet make his first squad under Solskjaer.

David de Gea, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial will all surely return to the starting line-up.

Day off, what day off? Solskjaer put a spare 90 minutes to good use on Saturday to watch Burnley’s defeat to Manchester City after only getting back from the Emirates in the early hours.

Solskjaer is leaving no stone unturned to maintain United’s remarkable run of form and it will be interesting to see what he learnt from watching the Clarets in the flesh.

With one eye on the United game, Sean Dyche made seven changes for the trip to the Etihad and his side did not muster a single shot on target.

Solskjaer can become the first manager to start his reign with seven successive Premier League wins if United defeat Burnley. But the beauty of the Norwegian is he never gets carried away.

Ahead of making the most successful ever start as United manager, against Spurs earlier this month, Solskjaer said ‘when I’m in a position, I never look back on what I’m doing that way’.

Solskjaer will just be focused on getting another three points and keeping the pressure on fourth-placed Chelsea.
