Top BBC Journalist gives emotional tribute to Oliver Mtukudzi

Top BBC reporter Larry Madowo has today paid his tribute to the fallen legend Oliver Mtukudzi.

Many can confess to not understanding a word he sand but his mastery and talent of music was for all.

Apart from music,  Oliver Mtukudzi became a UNICEF Regional Goodwill Ambassador for Eastern and Southern Africa in 2011, focusing on young people’s development, and HIV and AIDS prevention.  He was also a champion to end child marriage.

Madowo said that he was so sad to hear of the passing of the great Oliver Mtukudzi.

“It just hit me that he joins two other African music legends that I also had the privilege to interview on my old show – Hugh Masekela and Papa Wemba.” he said in his post

Even though we have a lot musicians of all generations, Madowo says that when he got the opportunity to be around people like Mtukudzi,  he knew he was in the presence of greatness and felt honoured that they would come on their little show.

“They didn’t want their water at a certain temperature and they didn’t refuse pictures with the crew. They taught us, and they laughed with us and they shared. Thank you for the memories and the music. Rest in Power” reads his post in part

Remembering the last conversation they had back in 2016 these are the words that are still solid in his mind.

‘The purpose of song is to give life and hope, to heal the broken hearts,’

There are also testimonials of how his music blessed and touched souls and beyond that; his personality  saw him interact with people of all kinds.

The legend lived his live to the fullest and when he met his death, there is so much he will be remembered for.
