Kenyan international Jesse Were made history over the weekend by becoming Zesco United’s all-time top scorer with a goal against Kaizer Chiefs in a Caf Confederations Cup fixture.
In a match which Zesco won 2-1, the goal ensured Were moved top of the all-time scorers’ list with 65 goals to his name.
The former Tusker man scored his third goal in two matches as the Zambians stormed the group stages of the competition on a 5-2 aggregate.
Were has been at the Zambian Super League club for just three years and his five-goal haul in Caf Competitions this year have made him the club’s highest goalscorer surpassing Jackson Mwanza with whom they were tied on 60 goals at the end of the 2018 season.
Although he has never finished as top scorer in the Zambian league, the lanky forward has established himself as one of the most reliable poachers in Zambia averaging 17 goals a season.
