What hope does a country have when even the law enjoys breaking the law?Two Administration Police (AP) officers were Sunday arrested in Mumias, Kakamega County, after they were caught allegedly ferrying illicit liquor in a police vehicle.

The officers; Harison Kwambai and Meshack Musembi were arrested alongside a trader identified as Tabitha Ngera at Mayoni area after members of the public reported that the vehicle was ferrying suspicious goods.

Confirming the incident, Mumias police boss Peter Kattam said the illicit liquor is believed to have been sneaked into the country through the Busia border and was being ferried to Kakamega Town.

The nabbed alcohol, which was in sachets, was estimated to be worth Ksh.200,000.

The three were detained at Mumias Police Station as further investigations continue.

Up to 60 per cent of alcohol in Kenya is illicit and dangerous, more than double previous estimates by the World Health Organisation.

This was according to report by the International Alliance for Responsible Drinking (IARD).

Kenya has, however been lauded for the success of its collaborative efforts to deal with the alcohol menace, with Senator Keg, which is produced by East African Breweries Limited, cited as an instance where the government, communities and regulated producers have come together to produce a safe and affordable alternative to bad alcohol.

The report published featuring 18 countries stated that more than $1.8 billion was lost because of the illicit alcohol.
