Will governor Sonko name a deputy from Mt Kenya?

Image result for mike sonkoWhile addressing the media in a Mombasa hotel, Sonko said he has already settled on the person who will replace Polycarp Igathe and unveil a new cabinet on Friday to stem the turmoil in his troubled administration.

“On Friday, I will unveil the new cabinet and the new Deputy Governor. My administration is very stable and that is why Kenyans can see development in the city,” he said.
He warned that he will not entertain any CEC who would condone corruption in his docket.

And the deputy will be a woman, as he had earlier hinted in a list he had drawn up.

“A reshuffle is a must in any government. Even the president did a reshuffle in his Cabinet. By Friday, I will name my cabinet and nominate the deputy governor,” Mr Sonko said.Image result for Women deputy governors nairobi

The governor has been on the spot over the delay in filling the deputy governor’s post and the exodus among his Cabinet members.

In August last year, the governor drew up a list which featured four women namely former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru, corporate guru Agnes Kagure and lawyers Karen Nyamu and Jane Weru.

This was later in October whittled down to Ms Nyamu and Ms Weru. However nothing has happened since.

The former deputy governor Polycarp Igathe resigned as the Nairobi deputy governor alleging that he has failed to earn the trust of governor Mike Sonko.

Through his twitter handle, Igathe said that he wishes to resign to avoid “abusing or betraying my oath of office to Kenyans, Nairobians & my family.”

“Dear Nairobians, it is with a heavy heart that I resign my seat as elected Deputy Governor of Nairobi City County effective 1 pm on Jan 31, 2018. I regret I have failed to earn the trust of the Governor to enable me to drive Admin & Management of the county.”Image result for mike sonko

On March 9, the Supreme Court gave the governors the green light to replace their deputies if the incumbents resign, die in office, or are charged.

The nominees are then confirmed by the County Assemblies within 60 days of their nomination before taking an oath.

The six judges of the Apex Court – CJ David Marawa, DCJ Philomena Mwilu, Jackson Ojwang, Smokin Wanjala, NJoki Ndungu and Mohamed Ibrahim decided that the post would not be filled with further elections can.
