For decades three East Africa countries have been conflicting over Lake Victoria, however the long rivalry is set to come to an end after security officers and beach management unit officials from Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda have embarked on a harmonisation of policies regulating the fishing industry to end the perpetual conflict between them in Lake Victoria.

Migori County police boss Joseph Nthenge said the public participation exercise targeting the fishing community is going on in the three countries where fishermen are given an opportunity to suggest the changes they want in policies regulating the industry.

Mr. Nthenge said they will be able to harmonise laws which does not require the input of Parliament while those which needs the effort of legislators will also be forwarded for consideration once the public participation exercise elapses.

The county police boss said coming up with harmonised laws accepted across the three countries will end cases of harassment of fishermen a common occurrence in Lake Victoria.

Besides the harmonisation of the policies regulating the industry between the three countries, Mr. Nthenge said they are also sensitising fishermen and the beach management unit officials on laws regulating the industry.
