Former Kenya Airways CEO Titus Naikuni has turned an appointment to head the newly created water company in Kajiado.

In a letter to governor Joseph ole Lenku, he cited his busy schedule as the reason for declining the post.

“I have no other reason to reject the appointment but my busy schedule cannot allow me to effectively work for the county,” Naikuni said on Wednesday.

Last year, Lenku collapsed Kajiado’s four county water companies and announced the establishment of Kajiado Water and Sewerage Company.

He tasked the firm to improve water access in the county from 30 per cent to 65 per cent within four years.

The collapsed agencies’ were accused of mismanagement, which affected services.

“The county had four water firms Oloolaiser, Olkejuado, Oldonyo Orok and Nol-Turesh /Loitokitok. They had many problems including water pilferage and lack of reliability. In fact, one had more than 70 per cent of its water unpaid over the years,” Lenku said.

“We have, therefore, arrived at the conclusion that these water companies are not sustainable and cannot, in the prevailing situation, be relied on to raise the water access to our desired 60 per cent in the next four years.”

Lenku said Kajiado residents are wasting productive hours searching for water.

The new water agency is mandated to identify new water sources. It was also be expected to network and fund raise from development partners, upgrade water systems and deploy new technology.
