English FA threatens Rooney

The FA Chiefs in England are threatening to cancel Wayne Rooney’s gala dinner at Wembley after he was arrested in the United States. The sport’s governing body are furious and disappointed with Rooney after he was held by US cops for being drunk and swearing in public last month. Rooney was given a Wembley send-off against the USA on November 15 last year and the FA also generously agreed to stage a glitzy dinner in his honour at the national stadium later this year.

FA chiefs will hold talks with Rooney’s PR team this week before deciding whether to quietly cancel the event. Gareth Southgate was somehow persuaded to give Rooney his final cap against the USA in his 120th appearance for the country. Although a highly-publicised bucket collection failed to take place on the night, a special fund-raising dinner was also agreed as part of the Rooney indulgence.

FA chiefs are now considering whether to can it after the latest embarrassing episode of his colourful – and controversial – career. Rooney had been in Saudi Arabia on December 15 for the Riyadh Formula E Grand Prix before returning to Cheshire for Christmas. England’s all-time leading scorer, 33, quit Everton to head to Major League Soccer club (MLS) DC United in June last year.

A spokesman for Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said: “He was booked into the Loudoun County Adult Detention Centre on December 16, 2018, on a charge of public intoxication stemming from an arrest by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police (MWAA). “He was later released on a personal recognisance bond.” He was ordered to pay a $25 (£19.64) fine before heading home to Cheshire for the festive season.
