Manchester United could make another play for Atletico Madrid captain Diego Godin after the defender intimated he wouldn’t sign a new contract.

Godin was one of several defenders to be linked with a move to Old Trafford when Jose Mourinho was desperate to bolster his backline. The likes of Harry Maguire and Toby Alderweireld were talked about as potential targets for Mourinho but in the end, he failed to get the reinforcements he wanted.

With Mourinho out of the picture and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer enjoying a great start to life as the club’s interim manager, United are again being linked with Godin but there will be no shortage of interest from Europe’s top clubs including Bayern Munich and PSG.

Godin has been instrumental in turning Atletico into one of La Liga’s most consistent clubs under the guidance of respected boss Diego Simeone. Several Atletico players are out of contract in the summer with Godin becoming a free agent in June.

Spanish newspaper Marca reported: “Atletico and Godin don’t see eye-to-eye.” The report explained that the player and club made a verbal agreement last August on an improved contract after there was interest from Manchester United.

Atletico are also in a fight to keep hold of defender Lucas Hernandez who is wanted by Bayern Munich. The German giants are willing to trigger the 22-year-old’s €80million release clause and the player himself has failed to kill off the speculation. He told French newspaper Le Figaro: “There are plenty of European clubs that I dream of playing for. I’m fine here in Madrid, but I would think about leaving tomorrow if a project interested me.”
