Manchester City boss knows Liverpool weak-link

Manchester City are looking to chase down Liverpool in the title race, but Pep Guardiola has identified an issue that could cost Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The weight of history can be a significant burden to carry and Pep Guardiola believes it could yet crush Liverpool’s dreams of a first league title in 29 years.

City welcome Liverpool to the Etihad on Thursday night needing to win to cut the gap to four points at the top of the Premier League. Victory for Jurgen Klopp’s side would see them move 10 points clear of City and into a strong position to claim a first league championship title since 1989/90. Guardiola had previously suggested it was win or bust for his team on Thursday, but even if Liverpool do extend their lead he believes the weight of ending the long drought at Anfield for the title could weigh heavily on their shoulders as the season draws to a close.

Related imageFor that reason he wants to see City keep up the pressure, just in case the advantage does slip from Liverpool’s grasp. It wouldn’t be the first time they’ve come close to a league title only to see it snatched away late on, with City claiming the 2013/14 prize when Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool side were in pole position in the final weeks of the season.

“I can feel what they feel, the Liverpool players. After 29 years not winning the Premier League, to be there to win the Premier League. I understand,” Guardiola said.
