Reconciliation committee to visit KNUT, TSC headquarters over looming strike

Knut secretary General Wilson Sossion encircled by senior officials

Labour Ministry says reconciliation committee is set to visit Kenya National Union of Teachers ( KNUT) and Teachers Service Commission (TSC) headquarters within the next 3 days in bid to avert the looming teachers strike.

The Teachers Union has hence threatened to go on strike effective from 2nd January 2019. The union has maintained that the strike is still intact.

Labour Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani recently appointed a special committee to mediate between the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) over looming strike.

The mediation team which is led by labour relations officer Charles Maranga will address concerns raised by the KNUT regarding teachers’ promotions, transfers and performance appraisals.

KNUT secretary General Wilson Sossion issued the strike notice over poor working conditions and the introduction of Teacher Professional Development (TPD) policies which they claim was done without consultation with all the stakeholders.

Sossion-led team also wants promotion of teachers to be based on merit and performance and not anything else they have not approved. At least 3,094 primary and secondary head teachers have been transferred some of whom TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia explained had attained mandatory retirement age.
