Hope for Manchester United as Sir Alex Ferguson lands a new job at the club

Sir Alex had a glittering managerial career which saw him win 25 major honours

Sir Alex Ferguson is back working for Manchester United as a consultant in a bid to restore the club’s glory days.

The former Red Devils boss played a part in hiring Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the return of his former assistant Mike Phelan after Jose Mourinho was sacked last week.

And according to The Sun, ex-United player Solskjaer will plan regular contact with Ferguson which is something his predecessor chose not to do.

It is also understood former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel wants to join the club as the director of football.

United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who is determined to get things right after three managerial failures on his watch, turned to the legendary manager as he prepared to sack Mourinho following their 3-1 loss at Liverpool.

Ferguson, 77, who underwent surgery in May after suffering a brain haemorrhage, will not be employed in a full-time capacity however.

Along with Sir Bobby Charlton and David Gill who make up United’s football board, Ferguson had rarely, if ever, been asked for advice or assistance by Woodward.

And it is understood Woodward did not consult him over the appointment of Mourinho in May 2016.

However, one source added: “Once Woodward had talked to the Glazers and told them he wanted Jose out, he needed to be certain he could get the right kind of figure in for the short term at least.

“That’s where Fergie came in and he helped make sure the whole thing happened with Solskjaer and Phelan.”
