Why Scholes is rooting for Argentine man for Manchester United job

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes that Mauricio Pochettino is the right man to bring the club back to its former glory following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho. Mourinho was put out of his misery on Tuesday morning by Ed Woodward. He had overseen United’s worst start to a Premier League season. Ole Gunnar Solskaer, a six-time Premier League champion with Manchester United, has been placed in charge until the end of the season, when a full-time replacement will be named. Scholes hopes that figure is Pochettino, who has earned rave reviews for the job he has done at Tottenham over the past four years.

‘Pochettino’s the man,’ former Manchester United and England midfielder Scholes told BBC Radio 5 Live. ‘If he wants the job then I think it’s his. ‘He carries himself brilliantly with the media and with his team. He promotes young players and most importantly he wins a lot of football matches. ‘I know people say he’s got a great team at Tottenham. He has. But can he ever really win the league with Tottenham? ‘I’m not sure he can. With United, he’ll have the spending power, the money and he’ll be capable of winning the league. I think if he wants the job then he’s definitely the man.’

Scholes also said that Manchester United’s problems will not disappear just because Mourinho is no longer in the hot-seat. And the legendary midfielder says his former club need to sign at least four players over the next six months to compete with the best teams in England. ‘You look back six months and we finished second in the Premier League so we can’t be that far behind,’ he said. ‘Confidence is obviously very low and he’s going to need some new players, there’s no doubt about that.

‘Especially if Pochettino comes in, he wants his players to play football and play with confidence so he’ll need a couple of centre-halves who can play football and can play out from the back. ‘I think he’ll need a midfield player, possibly a centre-forward so you’re looking at maybe three or four players. ‘Pochettino, if he comes, will bring his experience with what he’s done at Tottenham as well. He could make a big difference to this team.’ Manchester United travel to Cardiff City on Saturday.
