Drama as Matatu Driver Abducts two Police Officers in Kerinyaga

Two police officers, in Embu, were, on Saturday, kidnapped by a matatu driver and dumped in a forest in Kirinyaga County.

The officers had moved to arrest the driver for flouting traffic rules after they spotted him picking passengers at an undesignated area.

According to the acting head enforcement officer in the County Joseph Ndwiga, the officers had directed the suspect to drive towards Runyenjes Police Station for the offence.

The driver, however, sped off in a different direction with the officers on board. The officers may have alerted colleagues who trailed the matatu.

After he realised that he was being trailed, he abandoned the vehicle and disappeared leaving the officers and conductor. The vehicle was later impounded but the driver is still on the run.

This was, however, not the first time a police officer had been abducted. Early December, another police officer was kidnapped by a probox driver who stole his pistol and phone in Bungoma.

In November, another police officer was abducted by a driver along Mumias-Bungoma road. The female officer, who sustained injuries, had been assigned to escort the vehicle to the station when the driver sped towards a different location.
