Police reveal how Italian woman kidnappers slipped from their hands in Tana Delta

As light threatens to go out, hope is still hanging in for the kidnapped social worker in Kilifi whose search keeps on intensifying to save her from the monstrous humans who changed her life by putting her in the greatest risk ever.

Detectives tracking down Italian aid worker Silvia Romano, who was abducted by gunmen in Malindi last month, say the captors have moved to Garissa county and are planning to cross over to Somalia.

“Our efforts are now concentrated on ensuring they do not cross over to Somalia and that is why additional police have been brought in,” said a police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity.

On Monday, Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet deployed police from specialised units, among them Recce squad, in the area.

Until last week, police believed the kidnappers were hiding in one of the manyattas in Assa village of Garsen area of Tana River county.

Police raided the village on Saturday and arrested about 100 people for allegedly aiding the kidnappers to escape. They  were detained at Minjila and Gamba police stations but later released.

“We are surprised how the kidnappers slipped from our hands in Tana Delta. We are still hopeful that we will rescue the woman,” said the police officer. Last week, Coast regional police boss Bernard Lemparmai said police were closing in on the suspects.

A week ago one of the three key suspects linked to the abduction of an Italian volunteer student Silvia Romano was arrested.Mr Ibrahim Adan Omar was arrested on Sunday evening at around 7 pm in Bangale, Tana River County.

Coast Regional AP commander James Akoru confirmed the arrest revealing the suspect was cooperating with police.

Residents of Malindi in Kilifi County then revealed they had witnessed about three police and military choppers flying towards the north at the borders of Tana River, Garissa and Lamu counties.

A multi-agency security team comprising of police and army units was reportedly sealed off Boni Forest and the areas bordering Lamu, Garissa and Tana River counties in search of the bandits who also injured five locals at Chakama in Kilifi during the ambush on November 20, 2018.

The former Tana River Governor Hussein Dado issued a five-day ultimatum to the pastoral community to find the abducted Italian volunteer.
