Politics For Presidency? Former Ally Campaigns Against DP Ruto In Run Up To 2022 Elections

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and Deputy President William Ruto appear to have had a frosty relationship in recent weeks. Mr Wamalwa, who has missed several meetings attended by Ruto in the Western region has said the Deputy President is not assured of succeeding President Uhuru Kenyatta, citing precedents.

The differences between the two hitherto political buddies heightened after Wamalwa missed meetings attended by Ruto in his home turf of Trans-Nzoia and Bungoma counties. Wamalwa was absent on Sunday when Ruto joined local leaders and other faithful for the Catholic Diocese of Kitale Family Day at the Kitale showground, which brought together worshipers from Trans Nzoia and West Pokot counties. The CS was again absent on Saturday when the DP graced the 25th anniversary thanksgiving of Father Pius Lukhale of Bungoma Diocese at Mabanga.

On December 9, Wamalwa missed a fundraiser at Christ the King Cathedral Church in Bungoma town where Ruto was the chief guest. Neither was he present on December 1 at the homecoming party for Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa.
Last Tuesday during the launch of the Western Jurists Sacco at a city hotel, Wamalwa launched a thinly veiled attack on the DP, noting that the latter was not assured of the presidency after Uhuru retires. Speaking at the function attended by top Luhya leaders, including senators Moses Wetang’ula (Bungoma) and Amos Wako (Busia), Wamalwa said the Luhya community had an equal chance of producing a president.

“Out of 10 vice-presidents Kenya has had, only (retired president) Daniel arap Moi was the one who succeeded the president following the demise of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta,” he said. Although the DP has not officially responded to the attacks by the CS, his key lieutenants from Western Kenya have not had kind words for the former New Ford-Kenya party leader.

Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka last weekend called leaders from the region who were fighting Ruto jokers. “We helped our brother Eugene to get a Cabinet position through Ruto. He is now running up and down campaigning against Ruto. This is so sad,” said John Waluke (Sirisia). Wamalwa, who spent the weekend in Kisii and Nyamira region where he attended a series of fundraisers, declined to comment on the perceived frosty relationship with Ruto.
