Dorothy Mashipei wins a state award for her Bead making initiative

The peak of one’s talent can propel him/her to greater heights and Dorothy Mashipei is familiar with this story.

Mashipei is one of the ambitious women who have been in the ‘leadership circles’  and have used that as an opportunity to lift others up as well.

Her talent and bead work has today earned her a grand award during the Jamhuri Day celebrations; from the head of state.

President Kenyatta has today awarded Dorothy Mashipei Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear, MBS, for her Ushanga Kenya Initiative that has transformed the lives of pastoral women.

The creativity and designs  by the women enrolled in this initiative are protected to ensure that they aren’t recreated anywhere else.

A famous tweep says that Dorothy  is the real definition of Kusema na kutenda. Her works can have been felt within the borders of Kenya and beyond hence gaining recognition.

For a long time, Dorothy has been the ultimate champion for women from pastoral communities and her efforts today were noticed by the entire nation.

The Ushanga Kenya initiative seeks to strengthen business and production capacity for women from pastoral communities as well as improve their competitiveness of beads products in local, regional and international markets for sustainable livelihoods.

The bead making initiative is active and has taken course  in 7 counties: Narok, Kajiado, Samburu, West Pokot, Turkana, Baringo and Marsabit over a five year period.

Through the Ushanga Kenya Initiative, women have been organized into cooperatives to enable them pull resources, enhance technical skills and entrepreneurial skills and earn them a decent income.

Through Ushanga Kenya Initiative, the bargaining power of the pastoralist women has been strengthened through capacity Building in value addition and marketing skills.

Proud Kenyans have described Dorothy as a real heroine for this major stride in her passion and determination to serve as a solution provider with the intent of impacting the lives of others.

Good work deserves credit, favour and all the good vybes and today Dorothy has earned all that.
