Subira screening extended! Nairobians given one more week watch the film

 

There’s some good news for the many Kenyans who love procrastinating! The screening for the award-winning Kenyan film, Subira has been extended for another week. Now you really do not have nay excuse not to watch it.

 

The Subira Film Premiere was originally only screening from November 30 2018 to December 6 2018 at the Prestige, Westgate, Junction and Garden City cinemas.

In an announcement made on Twitter, the Nairobi screening of the film will now be showing from today, December 7 to December 13 2018.

Subira, a Kenyan film starring Brenda Wairimu and newcomer Tirath Padam which premièred in  November at Westgate Cinema. The film by Kenyan-Indian director Sippy Chadha is based on her 2008 short film of the same name.

Shot on location in Lamu and Nairobi, Subira tells the story of a young girl who is determined to live her dream of being a swimmer against the odds of restrictive local customs and a looming arranged marriage to an upper class family.

The newly released local production “Subira” scooped up 5 awards including “Best Feature Film,” Beast Lead Actress in a Film” which saw Brenda Wairimu feted for her work as a lead. The film was also acknowledged for “Best Editor”, “Best Lighting Technician” and “Best Director.”

 

 

The film has also won 15 international awards and now Kenyans get another chance to see the feature of the film, which has been made to a full-length movie.

The director of the film Sippy Chadha said that the story of Subira came from a place of deep personal experience.

“Growing up as a girl, in a traditional family in India, my entire life was laid out in front of me. I must behave a certain way, look a certain way, marry into a certain family, have children, in that order. There wasn’t any significance given to my unique sense of self. In fact, self-expression was not allowed. Girls must obey to be considered good,” said Sippy.

Subira also boasts some world-class talent behind the scenes including producer Vibeke Muasya who is currently developing a script for Netflix, costume designer Sophie Oprisanu who worked on Supa Modo and Disney’s Queen of Katwe starring Lupita Nyong’o as well as Hollywood-based film editor Terry Kelly who won Emmy Award for his work on Homeland.
