Kenya’s top lawyer ridicules Uhuru’s new appointment, proposes new cabinet reshuffle

Early this week, former vice President Moody Awori was appointed as a member of newly constituted Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund. The seven-member oversight board has been officially gazetted by the Finance Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich.

This could have come as a birthday gift to him from President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The development fund is made up of five Principal Secretaries from the Ministries of Education, Arts, Health, National Treasury and Sports (who is also the funds administrator) and will be working alongside Athletics Kenya boss Lieutenant General (RTD) Jackson Tuwei and former vice president Moody Awori.

Now appointing a 91 year old at a time when Kenyan youths are suffering from unemployment elicited bitter reactions online with most Kenyans wondering when Uhuru will give the youth a chance.

However, the President  defended his move, citing that corruption was the main reason why he appointed former Vice President Moody Awori as a board member of the Sports and Arts Social Development Fund.

“I’m being critisised that I am appointing a 91-year-old to look after the Youth Sports Fund. But put yourself in my shoes, ukiona vile watu wanaiba pesa… alafu tupatie kijana, mimi afadhali nikae na huyo mzee achunge hiyo pesa itumike vile inatakikana. ama mnasema aje jameni?

This has made a top Keyan Lawyer, Nelson Havi to come out in response to President Kenyatta’s sentiment, citing that in his reflection, youths are prone to theft of public funds. Havi goes ahead to suggest cabinet reshuffles in which he has proposed names of people he thinks should take up various ministries.

“I have upon reflection come to the conclusion that young leaders are prone to theft of public funds. I would therefore, propose Joseph Otiende as CS Education, Yekohada Masakhalia as CS Finance, Burudi Nabwera as CS Foreign Affairs and Kipchoge Keino as CS Sports. Should I go on?” read a post on his official twitter acccount.

Do you think old people can protect funds in ministries s alleged by the president?
