As Kenya’s oldest publishing newspaper, The Standard celebrates 100 years today, let’s take a trip down memory lane to the time the former First Lady, the Late Mama Lucy Kibaki stormed the Standard Group offices at night.
In 2005, Lucy Kibaki stormed the offices of Nation Group where she allegedly seized reporters’ notebooks and tape recorders protesting against stories that the paper had published about her.
Mrs. Kibaki arrived at the offices of the Daily Nation just before midnight on Monday, accompanied by a six-man security detail, and stayed until 5 am yesterday where she demanded that one of the arrest of the editors.
Mrs. Kibaki also assaulted Kenya Television Network cameraman Clifford Derrick, who had been filming the scene. She slapped him and tried unsuccessfully to take his camera from him to stop him from filming.
The newspaper today marks a century since since it’s first publication and venture into the Kenyan market. To mark this great milestone and to thank their readers, Standard Group is today selling the daily newspaper for Ksh. 50 which is Ksh. 10 less than what it would usually go for.
