Why Nairobi Commuters are mad with NTSA

The past few weeks have been very tough for Nairobi commuters. The introduction of the famed Michuki traffic rules in November, send most PSV operators on a go-slow.

The Matatu operators downed their tools in protest of the re-introduction of the laws. The aftermath of these was just chaotic. Nairobians had to seek alternative means of transport to get to work. The few Matatus on the road took advantage of the rise in demand to hike fares.

Efforts by Interior CS Fred Matiang’i to warns the operators to reduce the fare or risk having their licenses revoked were not hid. Matatus hiked the fare and it has never come back to normal again.

Nairobians have complained to the relevant authorities to have these addressed but it seems no one has been listening. It was therefore surprising when NTSA released a statement on Tuesday, asking passengers to report cases on a certain Android app that is available on Google Play store.

“We urge the public to report cases of arbitrary increase of fare through the NTSA app available on Google Playstore.” Reads part of the Statement.

This has received an uproar from Kenyans. And they have a right to do so. First of all, NTSA should stop behaving like they don’t know what is happening on these roads. Some of their staff use the same Matatus to get to work. So why do they want complains instead of fixing the problem?
