No Tuyisenge, No Kahata, No Problem for Gor Mahia as they shut down noisy Malawian side

Gor Mahia have stormed into the second round of the elite CAF Champions League competitions after overcoming Malawi side Nyasa big Bullets on post match penalties.

The green army will be grateful to the heroics of their veteran goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch, who saved two penalties, one in the 88th minute in a nervy match, that ended 1-0 in normal time.

Gor were under a lot of pressure going into the match having lost the SPL Super Cup to Kariobangi Sharks last weekend and needed something to kick-start their season.

A trip to Malawi, was all they needed to prove to doubters that they are not yet done. The task was made even harder with the absence of key players Jacques Tuyisenge and Francis Kahata.

Tuyisenge who was the club’s top scorer last season limped out of the match against Kariobangi on Sunday with a an injury and did not travel with the team. Kahata on the other hand is on the verge of making a big money move to Algerian  champions CS Constantine and featuring in the continental competitions would have made him cup tied for would be employers.

Without their key players, goal struggled to create chances against the hosts who have not lost at home for more than 10 games.

Nyasa bullets scored the sole goal of the game on the 55th minute through lethal striker Chiukepo Msowoya in the 55th minute. The striker however turned from hero to villain when he failed to beat Oluoch from the spot on the 88th minute, taking the game to penalties.

Bernard Ondiek, Boniface Ochieng, Humphrey Mieno and Captain Haron Shakava converted their spot kicks while Boniface Oluoch saved one from Gabeya to ensure the match ended 3-4 in favor of the away team.

Gor will meet a familiar foe in the name of Meddie Kagere when they face Tanzanian giants Simba SC in the next round. But for now, they switch eyes to their KPL opener against Bandari, where an acid test awaits.
