How employees have walked away rich in the best retrenchment deal ever!

Money is always the motivation for work. Mess with this and you mess with productivity and general mood.Sadly there are employees who have been let go in new move by company. This should be all bad but no, it has come with one of the best benefits in the work industry.

About 500 staff affected in the Telkom Kenya retrenchment will receive a modest Sh70,000 fare home once they receive their letters.

This was part of the agreement between the telco and Communications Workers Union (Cowu).

In the agreement, Telkom will be required to pay each retrenched employee severance dues for one month’s salary for every year worked.

The firm is also expected to pay salary in lieu of notice as per an employee’s contract of employment.

Telkom workers will also get paid in cash for all leave days earned but not taken as well as for any commissions earned.

The company, in the November 29 agreement, is also to pay any overtime due in cash to those entitled to the same.

Retrenched Telkom staff will also enjoy the data and airtime until February 28 next year.

The telco will also issue its employees with the certificate of services as per the agreement steered by the Federation of Kenya Employers.

Some of the affected employees have reportedly received their letters following the restructuring.

The retrenchment comes amid reports that Telkom has revived talks with Airtel to establish a giant telco to take on market leader Safaricom.

There were reports that the government is interested in acquiring more shares in Telkom for ‘strategic reasons’.

By close to the end of October people who follow telecoms stories in the country who have always suspected or been apprised of the rumour that Kenya’s third largest mobile operator Telkom was planning to lay off some of its workers.

The rumour was followed up a couple of days ago when the telco was briefing the press of its progress and plans for the future. At the time, Telkom CEO Aldo Mareuse did not confirm or deny any restructuring activities that would cost some employees their jobs.

Telkom finally officially issued a requisite 30-day notice to its stakeholders and relevant authorities such as the Ministry of Labour, of a workforce-restructuring exercise. The announcement implied that in thirty days, 500 of Telkom’s employees would no longer be working for the company.
