Jose Mourinho said he would not be surprised if Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly were available to play for Manchester United against Arsenal.

Both players travelled down to the south coast but were ruled out of the Southampton game through injury.Bailly picked up a back injury while Smalling had an ankle problem which led to Mourinho playing a back three of Phil Jones, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic in the 2-2 draw at St Mary’s.

But, the pair could be back in contention for United’s next league game against Arsenal. Mourinho was asked by the BBC which of his injured players could return for the visit of Unai Emery’s side.

“I don’t know. Victor Lindelof is an important injury. Alexis Sanchez is an important injury. Ashley Young is suspended. If Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly are ready – if they are ready to train tomorrow it wouldn’t be a surprise,” Mourinho said. Marcus Rashford was substituted in the second half with a small injury problem but Mourinho revealed the forward should be available for the Arsenal fixture.

“Fatigue, he was injured, he was asking to come out,” Mourinho said. “It was not that kind of injury, some players with that kind of injury do not play for two weeks but Marcus, I am pretty sure will be fine for the next one.”

Luke Shaw was another player who left the pitch with a knock and had to be replaced by Diogo Dalot in the second half. The left back went down after a challenge and was preparing to come back on after treatment but Mourinho had already made the decision to bring him off.

Ashley Young will miss the game against Arsenal through suspension as he picked up his fifth yellow card of the season.
